Indian Army, Navy and Air Force with its heavy and small arms and war equipments being produced by more than 25000 working force in 39 ordnance and ordnance equipment factories throughout the country to defend the land from out side enemy attacks from neighboring countries.

Despite heavy workload and high responsibilities few enthusiastic mountain lovers of Rifle Factory, Ishapore one of the 39 Ordnance Factories that was established 105 years back, nurtured an idea to set up one mountaineering club in the factory itself to promote one of the most adventurous and spirited games in an around the factory and local area. They approached to the then General Manager, Rifle Factory Ishapore with their concrete proposal for his consent and sanction to open a mountaineering club without hampering the productivity and keeping up the working responsibilities by them.

The Hon’ble General Manager considered the proposal and gave sanction to go ahead with the proposal. Hence the club came into existence in the year 1982 being its name as “Ordnance Factories Mountaineers and Trekkers (OFMT)”, Rifle Factory Ishapore.

With the passage of time the activities of the club spread into activities like Rock Climbing Course, High Altitude Trekking, Mountaineering Expedition, Family Trekking, Coastal Trekking, Desert Trekking, All India Slide Series Competition, Adventure Sports and so on.

Every year the club produces a good number of mountaineers by sending interested members to Basic, Advance, Adventure Mountaineering Course, Rescue Course to reputed mountaineering institutes e.g. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, Neheru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, Jawaharlal Institute of Mountaineering, J&K and WHMI, Manali.

During this period the OFMT/RFI has recorded many a national and international summits in the Himalayan Mountain range.

The first president of the club was Shri M. R. Jetprole, IOFS, Jt General Manager, Rifle Factory Ishapore and the present President is Shri A.K. Rai, IOFS, General Manager, Rifle Factory, Ishapore.

Ranks from General Secretary to executive members of the club are being elected by the General Members in the Annual General Body Meeting. The first General Secretary was Shri Rathin Mitra. Presently The post is acquired by Shri Biplob Chatterjee. Right from  the time of OFMT inception in the year 1982 all the Hon’ble General Managers, RFI / Presidents OFMT have been very much keen and interested to mountaineering games extending their long hand of co-operation and love to see the achievement of the club.

Today the club activities are not limited to the boundary of factory four walls but has spread around the country as a whole.

The achievement and activities of OFMT, RFI attracted the attention of The DGOF & Chairman, OFB and The President, OFSPB who eventually wanted to organise one All India Ordnance Factories Mountaineering Expedition. In 2008 a mountaineering expedition was executed by the Indian Ordnance Factories under the banner of the then OFSCB. The OFMT, RFI played a pivoting role in organizing the said expedition at Mt. Mamostang Kangri (7516m) near Siachen Glacier in Leh, J&K in Western Himalaya.

In initial years the club was homeless one. But then it’s reputation, publicity and various records in the tabloids had drawn the notice of the authorities. Presently the club is having an office along with a photo gallery in an area of approximately 2500sqft located in the Rifle Factory Ishapore, P.O. Nawabganj, Dist.
